Although the stock market closed almost unchanged, it traded in a wide range of 2% during the trading session, volatility has not disappeared. Breadth settled on a negative note with 1661 stocks advancing on the NYSE compared to 1986 that closed down. Internal momentum is still weak: 37 stocks reached new highs on the NYSE compared to 289 that closed on new 52 weeks lows. It may again take time to repair the carnage the stock market suffered since early October and trading may continue to be erratic for some time. The end of the year is near and books are soon going to close.
